2018 Toyota RAV4 in Sinking Spring, PA

The Toyota RAV4 is in its sixth generation. When it was launched in 1994, it proved a huge success for Toyota. It paved the way for the compact crossover. If you're shopping around in the crossover segment, here's what to expect from the 2018 RAV4.

Trim Levels

The RAV4 has six trim levels: LE, XLE, SE, Limited, Platinum and the new Adventure trim. All trims, except the Adventure, offer a hybrid version. The LE is the base trim and escalates to the fully loaded Platinum trim. The SE is the trim for those desiring a sportier look. It features 18-inch five-spoke sport alloy wheels and has the option of a two-tone colored exterior. In 2018, Toyota is introducing the Adventure, targeted at outdoor types, to the lineup. It is more rugged with large overfender flares, rocker panel guards, and black roof rails.

Engine

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission is standard across all trims. It delivers 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque that provides enough zip around the city.

Performance

All gasoline trims come standard with front-wheel-drive with the option of all-wheel-drive. Hybrid models come standard with all-wheel-drive. If fuel efficiency is important to you, front-wheel models are more efficient than all-wheel models. For better road handling, the sportier SE features a sport-tuned suspension. The 2018 RAV4 can tow up to 1,500 pounds. If you need more towing power, opt for the Adventure that tows up to 3,500 pounds. The new Adventure is also better suited for the outdoors. It's more robust with limited slip differential, higher ground clearance, and a Tow Prep Package that includes an upgraded radiator and extra coolers for engine oil and transmission fluid.  For those looking for a small SUV to take the family on regular camping or hiking trips, the Adventure is the one for you.

Interior

The RAV4 doesn't have the most exciting interior; however, it does boast one of the largest cargo areas in its class. If you need a compact family car that can haul a lot of stuff, buy a RAV4. There's 38.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. Fold down the seats and space increases to 73.4 cubic feet. Standard interior features include a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Toyota's Entune infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available but smartphone integration is available via the Entune app. Fabric seats are standard on the lower trims while SofTex vinyl is fitted to the upper trims. The Limited model comes with a leather-trimmed shift lever and the top Platinum trim adds a heated steering wheel and ambient footwell lighting.

Safety Features

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard across all trims. This safety suite includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. All trims also feature vehicle stability control, traction control, brake assist, and smart stop technology. When equipped with LED headlights, the RAV4 is a Top Safety Pick with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Overall, the 2018 Toyota RAV4 is a solid vehicle that is predictably reliable and offers a comfortable and fairly quiet ride.
