The 2022 Toyota Tacoma brings a series of new updates to the table for the model year, giving shoppers looking for an off-road capable midsize truck something special to salivate over. An all-new heightened suspension lift at up to 1.5-inches, as well as an all-new 4×4 styling package, join the line-up for the 2022 outing. For those who need a little help in finding the right trim and configuration before heading to Performance Toyota, your Toyota Tacoma dealer, this 2022 Tacoma buyer guide outlines what you get with the truck, as well as which trim might fit you best.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Trim Selection

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is available in six different trims. This includes a base trim, the TRD trims for off-roading, and the Limited for luxury. The Tacoma can tow up to 6,800 pounds when outfitted with the most powerful powertrain and can handle a maximum payload of up to 1,685 pounds. A Trail Special Edition can also be acquired.

The trims are available in rear-wheel drive or in a 4×4 format with 4WDemand part-time electronically controlled support thanks to an electronically controlled transfer case. The powertrains include a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder with variable valve timing that outputs 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, or a 3.5-liter V6 that manages 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The 2.7-liter is attached to a 6-speed automatic, while the V6 can be outfitted to the 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. The Tacoma is also available with a 5-foot bed or a 6-foot rear bed in Access or Double Cab format.

SR Trim Details

The SR has the base 2022 model year features, containing everything you would want from a standard truck model. This starts with the dark gray grille and black surround in the front and a fiber-reinforced sheet-molded composite inner bed with steel outer panels. You get rail caps, an easy-lower tailgate that can be locked, as well as a deck rail system with four adjustable tie-down cleats and four fixed cargo tie-down points for the bed. The rail and beds are standard across the entire trim line.

The SR sits atop 16-inch steel wheels and comes with standardized skid plates under the engine and front suspension, the latter of which is also a trim-wide standard. An SR Convenience Package is also available, which includes remote keyless entry. An SX Package is also available for the SR, which includes 16-inch alloy wheels, overfenders, mirror caps, as well as headlight bezels and specialized door handles.

Inside, a 4.2-inch multi-information display unit provides an information cluster for the driver featuring telematics. Each of the trims come with a 4.2-inch information display, but the off-road trims have additional features that add an inclinometer with roll and pitch displays. Every trim also comes with three USB ports, one for the media and two for charging.

The SR’s infotainment suite features a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as well as connectivity for Amazon Alexa. You have a 3-month trial to SiriusXM Satellite Radio, as well as hands-free phone activation and wireless Bluetooth features. You can also use the Tacoma as a Wi-Fi hotspot, thanks to Wi-Fi Connect. The seating in the SR consists of fabric trimming with a 4-way adjustable driver and front passenger seat, including lumbar support on the driver side.

Every trim also comes with the Toyota Safety Sense, which includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is also standard, along with Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beams. Airbags, LATCH support, a Class IV towing hitch receiver, and an engine immobilizer are also all standard across the trim line.

SR5 Trim Details

On the outset, the SR5 is equipped with a charcoal grille with a chrome surround and a matching rear chrome bumper. Also, unlike the SR trim, the SR5 comes equipped with project-beam headlights with daytime running lights and integrated fog lights. The SR5 is also situated on 16-inch dark gray alloy wheels, but optional black alloy wheels are available. You can also have front and rear mudguards installed if you opt for the Appearance Package.

Inside, the SR5 trim features an auto-dimming day and night rearview mirror. The seating arrangements include fabric-trimmed seats with a 10-way power adjustable driver seat that includes lumbar support, along with a 4-way adjustable front passenger seat. The SR5 also comes with a leather-trimmed shift lever and telescopic steering wheel with hands-free Bluetooth audio controls.

You also have a standard power sliding rear window with privacy glass for the Double Cab. The infotainment suite is the same as the SR but with an 8-inch touchscreen. An SR5 Dynamic Navigation Package includes the Dynamic Navigation suite with a 3-year active trial. Additionally, it comes with a 1-year trial for Destination Assist.

The Trail Special Edition Package is available exclusively for the SR5, which includes 16-inch bronze-finished wheels and a Toyota center cap. It equips the SR5 with a locking rear differential, a suspension lift of 1.1-inches for the front and 0.5-inches for the rear, along with an ORP skid plate, and Goodyear Kevlar all-terrain tires with enhanced sidewalls. The package also comes equipped with lockable bed storage, black badges of the 4×4 and V6 variety, as well as a specialized SR5 badge. Black fabric seats with tan stitching are included, along with all-weather floor liners and a 120-volt outlet in the rear bed.

TRD Sport Trim Details

The TRD Sport comes with many of the basic amenities available in the SR and SR5 trims. But it replaces the integrated fog lights with wide-angle fog lights. The TRD sits atop 17-inch machined alloy wheels, and it also comes with a gray grille with a chrome surround and a hood scoop. A moonroof is also available with the optional Premium Package. Like the SR5, you can acquire front and rear mudguards with the Appearance Package.

The infotainment suite is the same as the SR5, but the TRD comes with a Qi-compatible wireless charging station for smart devices. There is also the addition of free Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect limited subscription services. The TRD also features the same seating setup as the SR5 but with the option to swap the fabric with leather-trimmed seats.

The TRD trims opt into the smart key system on the driver and front passenger side, along with push-button start functionality. A TRD Premium Sport Package is available both for the Access Cab and Double Cab, featuring heated front seats, auto headlights, a premium audio setup, and the Dynamic Navigation system. It also has the option for utilizing the Multi-Terrain Monitor feature with integrated camera support if you opt to purchase the Technology Package.

The TRD Premium Off-Road Package is available exclusively for the TRD Off-Road trim, too. The package features leather-trimmed seats with heated front seats, a moonroof, automatic headlights, and a premium JBL audio system. It comes with Service Connect, Destination Assist, Remote Connect, and Dynamic Navigation like the other packages as well.

Seating arrangements are the same as the TRD Sport, along with the interior accouterments and the infotainment suite. Much like the TRD, however, there is the option to add the upgraded premium audio and dynamic navigation systems. You can access these systems by acquiring the Premium Audio and Dynamic Navigation Package.

With the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Limited trim, you get everything from the TRD Off-Road trim, but with a few extra special goodies. This includes a chrome bezel around the LED fog lights, as well as a silver grille on the front fascia with a chrome surround and an integrated front camera. Heated, chrome-accented power outside mirrors come standard, with integrated turn signals, along with chrome-accented door handles.

The power moonroof also comes standard on the Limited trim without requiring any of the optional packages. This luxury trim rides atop 18-inch polished alloy wheels, but you can opt to have 18-inch dark smoke alloy wheels installed instead. The Limited also comes equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor automatically installed.

The Nightshade Special Edition Package is available exclusively for the Limited trim, which includes 18-inch dark smoke wheels, black wheel locks, as well as matching exhaust tip, mirror caps, and fog light bezels.
