Few automakers have as diverse a lineup of SUVs as Toyota. This auto giant offers SUVs in all shapes and sizes, running from the compact RAV4 all the way to the full-size Sequoia. 2023 Toyota 4Runner

Of the three largest Toyota SUVs, the 4Runner is the one that has been offered the longest. It may seem surprising, but Toyota has been putting drivers behind the wheel of the 4Runner since 1984. This makes it one of the longest-running models in the Toyota lineup. This is a testament to the success of this SUV, which Toyota is celebrating in 2023 with a 40th Anniversary Special Edition model. This is part of the fifth generation of the 4Runner, which started during this SUV’s 2010 model year.

The Toyota 4Runner is a midsize SUV. Its rugged looks let you know that this is a serious machine. Unlike many other automakers, Toyota builds the 4Runner on a truck platform. This gives it a stronger, more powerful ride. You can choose from rear-wheel drive to give you better on-road performance, and four-wheel drive, to improve traction and allow you to take the 4Runner off-road. If this is what you plan to do with your SUV, then the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro are the trims of the 4Runner you should consider. These up the ante in off-road features, allowing you to take your 4Runner on its next adventure.

Aside from offering an incredible nine different trim levels on the 2023 4Runner, Toyota also gives you the option of adding a third row of seats. This helps set the 4Runner apart from many other midsize SUVs that come with either two rows or three rows of seats as a standard.

The 2023 4Runner runs on a standard 4.0-liter V6 gas engine paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. This engine delivers 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the 4Runner is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds. The roominess of the 4Runner allows you to carry 88 cubic feet of cargo in the trunk with the rear seats folded down, depending on whether you buy a two-row or three-row model.

2023 Toyota Highlander

Named for a popular area in Scotland, the Toyota Highlander has made its mark as one of the most versatile and popular three-row midsize SUVs on the market today. Toyota introduced the Highlander in 2001, the same year it launched the Sequoia. Since then, the Highlander has gone through four model generations, with the latest version appearing during the 2020 model year.

The Highlander offers drivers three roomy rows of seats, making it ideal for someone with a large family. It is also considered one of the safest models in its vehicle class, having been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Each year, the IIHS conducts a series of crash tests on most passenger vehicles, and names the best models as Top Safety Picks. A big reason for the success of the Highlander comes from Toyota’s decision to make its suite of driver assistance features standard across all trim levels.

The 2023 Highlander comes in two different versions. The standard Highlander has six different trim levels and features a 2.4-liter turbo I-4 gas engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This provides 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. You can choose between front-wheel drive models that provide 25 miles per gallon combined and all-wheel drive models that deliver 24 miles per gallon combined.

The other version is the Highlander Hybrid, which was introduced in 2017. The 2023 Highlander Hybrid comes in five different trim levels and runs on a 2.5-liter I-4 gas engine paired with one or two electric motors. If you opt for front-wheel drive, there is one electric motor attached to the front axle. If you opt for all-wheel drive, you will get a pair of electric motors, each driving a specific axle. There is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which works to blend the performance of the gas engine and electric motor. As a result, the Highlander Hybrid produces up to 243 total horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. This results in a combined fuel economy of 36 miles per gallon. The only drawback is that the Highlander Hybrid can only tow up to 3,500 pounds, less than the 5,000 pounds of maximum trailering from the conventional gas-engine Highlander.

2023 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is named for one of the largest trees in the world. It makes sense since this full-size SUV is certainly big and roomy. In fact, the Sequoia offers you room for up to eight passengers in its three rows of seats. The roominess of the Sequoia is shown by the fact that it offers up to 33.7 inches of legroom in the third row. Toyota introduced the Sequoia in 2001, and the all-new 2023 model is the third generation of this behemoth.

Toyota offers the 2023 Sequoia in five different trim levels, with a choice of rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. It runs on a 3.5-liter i-FORCE MAX Twin Turbo V6 Hybrid with a ten-speed transmission, which is standard across all trim lines. By going with a hybrid engine, Toyota has boosted the fuel efficiency of this very large SUV. The twin turbochargers also get the most performance out of the V6 gas engine. The combination of the gas engine and the electric motor deliver 437 combined horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the 2023 Sequoia can get up to 22 miles per gallon combined. This is the kind of fuel economy you rarely see in a full-size SUV. Even with its fuel-efficient powertrain, the Sequoia doesn’t shortchange you on performance. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is capable of towing up to 9,520 pounds.

The designers at Toyota have done an exceptional job of apportioning the space inside the Toyota. Aside from its roomy cabin that provides comfortable seating for up to eight passengers, the Sequoia also features plenty of trunk space. The trunk itself has room for up to 22.3 cubic feet of cargo, making it perfect for a family road trip. If you need more space, you can easily fold down the rear two seats to free up 86.9 cubic feet of space. This allows you to get the most utility out of your 2023 Toyota Sequoia.

Speaking of size, Toyota offers a 14-inch touchscreen for the Sequoia’s Toyota Audio Multimedia system. This allows you to stream your favorite music and access your favorite apps using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It seems fitting that a full-size SUV like the Sequoia would feature the largest touchscreen in Toyota’s lineup.
