How Often Should You Change Your Oil

checking oil
We all know that changing your oil is important, but lives can get busy around Reading and sometimes we end up putting off those maintenance appointments. So, just how often should you change your oil? Experts used to recommend an oil change frequency around 3,000 miles, but new technology has extended that interval tremendously. Now many vehicles can go anywhere from 7,500 to 10,000 miles before scheduling an oil change. However, we recommend consulting your owner’s manual or our service department for personalized advice.

Oil Change Frequency Guidelines

While some vehicles can go up to 10,000 miles before dropping by our service department, some drivers need to visit much sooner. Not only does your vehicle type and condition affect your oil change frequency, but your driving habits also play a big role. If you take part in any of the following around Lancaster, consider contacting our service department to discuss what schedule is best for you:

  • Off-roading
  • Commercial use
  • Racing
  • Heavy towing

Checking Oil Levels at Home

It’s important to know how often should you change your oil, but it’s also important to check your oil level at home to catch any small issues before they become more severe – like costly leaks in the oil system. Once a month, check your oil level with a dipstick. Observe the color and texture. This will help you establish what is normal with your car and also spot whether your oil has become dirty or gritty over time.

Oil Change Tips

  • Not a high-mileage driver? Even if you leave the car in the garage all year long in Wyomissing, bring it to the shop at least twice a year for an oil change. Oil breaks down whether you drive or not.
  • Be sure to change your oil filter at the same time you change your oil. If you’re doing the work yourself, our parts department has all the equipment that you need – just ask!
  • Should you use conventional or synthetic oil? Your owner’s manual is a great resource. Some vehicles require it, but others do not.
