Toyota has been making amazing sports cars and performance vehicles since they first introduced the Sports 800 in the 1960s. Although the early 2000s saw a bit of a lull in Toyota’s performance innovation, they have come back in a big way with the return of the Supra and the introduction of the all-new 2022 Toyota GR 86. The Toyota 86 has been around since 2012 (although it was sold as the Scion FR-S until 2016), but the most recent model was the 2020 Toyota 86 – after a one-year break, the updated and redesigned 2022 GR 86 is ready to take you to a new level of Toyota performance and high-power design.
With this new generation, Toyota has used what worked in the previous model and improved upon it in numerous ways. For example, the all-new GR 86 was developed using the previous generation’s chassis as a jumping-off point, then adding high-strength steel and additional improvements in key locations to make it even better. The result is a more impressive ride with boosted power and performance – while it features a naturally aspirated 2.4L engine that is similar to the previous model in some ways, performance with the GR 86 is better than ever as it delivers 14% more horsepower than before. You have your choice of a manual transmission or an automatic with paddle shifters for whichever driving experience you prefer.
Despite its incredible performance and sleek design, the all-new GR 86 is a surprisingly practical sports car thanks to seating for up to four passengers and great fuel economy. You get an 8-inch infotainment display standard, and you can select different modes to meet your needs at the moment. An available 8-speaker sound system offers rich, bold audio that is the perfect accompaniment to letting loose on the road. Come visit us at Performance Toyota today to learn more about the all-new GR 86 and let us show you what performance really means.
When looking at a sports car like the 2022 Toyota GR 86, there is no denying that the engine and how it performs is probably the most important thing to you. If you just want a car to get from point A to point B, then there are plenty of fine sedans that can handle that for you. A real sports car like the GR 86 needs to have some real muscle to it and be incredibly fun to drive.
Some sports cars are made available with multiple engine options, but that seems like a strange choice to us. If you are paying for a performance vehicle, then you should know that you are getting the very best experience from its engine possible without paying more. That is why we love that the Toyota GR 86 has a single engine available, so any other options or packages you might be interested in do not change the kind of power it has to offer.
The GR 86 features an engine with a similar design to the one in the previous generation, but it is better than ever. It is still a naturally aspirated flat-four to keep the weight and center of gravity low, but while the previous generation featured a 2.0L engine, the 2022 model now has a 2.4L engine with more power. This change in engineering has allowed for a 14% boost in performance – the new engine delivers 228 hp. In the previous generation, peak torque was reached at 6600 RPM, but the 2022 model gets to peak torque at just 3700 RPM, which means you get to enjoy amazing acceleration and an exhilarating experience as you come out of a curve.
While there is a single engine available, so you know you are getting the best driving experience possible with the 2022 Toyota GR 86, there are two different transmission options. We really love that Toyota has designed the GR 86 in this way because it means your choice is based on what you prefer in a sports car rather than wanting the greatest amount of horsepower. You can pick between either a manual or an automatic transmission, and they each offer a different experience behind the wheel.
The manual is a 6-speed close-ratio transmission designed to keep you in control and let you smoothly fly through the gears as you accelerate. We know there are a lot of arguments among sports-car fans about which type of transmission is superior, but in our opinion, it really just comes down to the feel you prefer. If you like a manual transmission, then you will love this one, and it allows you to go from 0 to 60 in just 6.1 seconds – the previous generation required 7.0 seconds.
Not everyone likes the demands of a manual transmission, of course, and so there is a 6-speed automatic that features paddle shifters to provide you with control when you want it. This transmission has Dynamic Rev Management for optimal performance and power; with the automatic, you can go from 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds, which required 8.0 seconds in the past. No matter which type of transmission you prefer, you are going to get a fantastic driving experience with the Toyota GR 86.
When you are looking at a sports car like the 2022 Toyota GR 86, the last thing you probably expect it to have is any kind of decent fuel efficiency. You would not expect good efficiency from something like a powerful truck or a large SUV, and sports cars are typically the same. But this model from Toyota really bucks that trend and delivers on great fuel efficiency while also giving you a lot of power and an amazing time behind the wheel.
Since there is only one engine offered on the GR 86, you do not have to worry about losing fuel economy in the name of power. The one thing to consider, however, is that your choice of transmission does have an impact on fuel efficiency. The difference between them is not huge, but going with an automatic transmission does get you superior overall fuel economy.
If you choose a model with a manual transmission, then the Toyota GR 86 gets an estimated 19 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. Choosing the automatic transmission, on the other hand, will reward you with 20 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. You might notice that difference when enjoying the vehicle for many years, but either way, you are going to make very few stops at the gas pump.
Any auto company can make a sports car, but it takes Toyota to make something truly special with a cockpit that is utterly designed around the driver. It is clear that Toyota’s designers and engineers have worked hard to ensure that driving the GR 86 is fun not only from a mechanical perspective but also as an experience. For starters, Toyota’s Smart Key system for the GR 86 works with both the driver and passenger doors, so the car responds as you approach it.
Once inside, you will find a gorgeous instrument panel and front dash that has been designed around your needs every step of the way. It has a horizontal configuration to it that ensures you have a clear view of the road ahead, with a 7-inch digital driver display that gives you everything you need to keep track of. The data displayed changes based on the mode you are in, including Normal, Sport, and Track modes, with a built-in lap timer in Track mode.
There are independent temperature controls for the left and right sides of the vehicle, with dials and piano-key switches that make controlling everything simple. In the previous generation, a 7-inch infotainment display was standard, but that has been replaced with an 8-inch screen and improved overall functionality. A 6-speaker audio system is standard, with an available 8-speaker system that takes sound quality up another level. If you want to go even further, there is an available 10-inch 200W subwoofer that offers an incredible audio experience.
