Berks County is home to a number of beautiful natural areas. If you’re looking for some spots to explore, check out these five top trails located near Sinking Spring. During the fall, you’ll catch a glimpse of the changing leaves and bright colors, while the spring season brings new life and fresh greenery to the areas.

Nolde Forest Trail

Nolde Forest Trail is located near Reading, which is about 7 miles from Sinking Spring. This 2.9-mile loop is open to hikers of all skill levels, offering a paved pathway that runs through expansive trees and colorful wildflowers. It’s a great hike for children and adults. Even when it’s warm outside, the trees provide shade to keep the trail more comfortable.

You can bring dogs on this trail, as long as they are on leashes. It is open year-round and also features platforms and bridges to make the hike a bit more visually pleasing. Make sure to snap a few photos on the bridges to remember your experience on the trail.

Gring’s Mill Trail

For a longer hike, head to Gring’s Mill Trail, located near Reading as well. This crushed stone trail is lightly trafficked and measures 9.5 miles out and back. It is rated as moderate, so it’s best for hikers who are able to handle some steep inclines and climbs. As you hike, you’ll cross a bridge over a river. It’s best to visit the trail between March and October as the forested region does receive some snowfall during the late fall and winter seasons.

Neversink Loop Trail

Another longer hike in the area is along the Neversink Loop Trail. This trail is moderately difficult with rugged terrain and a few steep climbs. As the leaves fall during the fall season, they can cover up rocks along the path, so make sure to walk carefully to avoid injury. The total distance of the trail is 10.9 miles, although you can go even farther by taking the challenging detour trail marked with red and white signage.

Thun Trail

At Thun Trail, you may spot groups of people taking nature walks or trail-running along the pathway. It has a beautiful setting in the middle of a thick forest and is open to hikers of all skill levels. It’s best to visit Thun Trail between April and September to avoid heavy snowfall.

Watershed Trail

If you’re up for a hike that’s a bit farther from home, head to the Watershed Trail. This loop trail is close to Carlisle, which is about 75 miles from Sinking Spring. It runs along a stream, offering a serene atmosphere for hikers of all skill levels. Dogs are welcome on the trail as long as they are leashed. During the warmer seasons, this trail is a bit busier, so arrive early in the morning to start your hike if you want to avoid the crowds.
