5 Great Fishing Spots Near Sinking Spring, PA to Try This Summer

The eastern Pennsylvania town of Sinking Spring is part of the greater Reading area, which means that residents and visitors have a huge number of great fishing spots available to them. We’ve picked out a few of our favorites here.

Lake Ontelaunee

Visit this 1,100-acre lake on the outskirts of Reading to fish for bass, crappie, catfish, perch, and bluegills. If you’re lucky, you might even land a pumpkinseed sunfish. Boats are not actually allowed on the lake, so you’ll have to pick out a comfortable spot on the shoreline to set up your rod and reel. There are also nearby campgrounds and bait-and-tackle shops, so you can easily make a whole weekend of your trip to Lake Ontelaunee.

Kurtz Fish Hatchery

You’ll find this unique attraction about half an hour from Sinking Spring. Kurtz Fish Hatchery is the area’s biggest provider of live bait, which is all raised right on-site. They even have vending machines where you can pick up bait in mere minutes. But the real attraction for fishing enthusiasts is undoubtedly the property’s 26-acre lake. For a small fee, you can fish this lake for the chance to catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegills.

Limestone Springs Fishing Preserve

Visit this fish farm just out of Sinking Spring for a unique opportunity to catch rainbow trout. The property has several different pools where you can find trout. Once you’ve got a day’s catch in your bag, take your fish to the tackle shop to have them weighed, cleaned, and bagged with ice. This takes all of the hassle from the fishing process, allowing you to focus on the fun. Limestone Springs also hosts different events throughout the week, including a fly fishing day, ladies’ day, veterans’ appreciation day, and more.

Lake Grubb Nature Park

Explore the 54-acre Lake Grubb Nature Park to find your new favorite fishing spot. Lake Grubb itself is 13 acres of picturesque fishing real estate. While boats are not allowed on the lake, fishing from the shore will give you the opportunity to catch largemouth bass without too much trouble. Veteran anglers will appreciate the additional challenge posed by the thick brush surrounding the lake, as well as some steep shorelines. And when you’ve had enough fishing for one day, relax at some of the lakeside pavilions or hike on one of the park’s trails.

Gring’s Mill Recreation Area

This historic Reading attraction features an information center, snack bar, tennis courts, softball field, and more. But if you’re into fishing, you’ll want to head straight to water. If you visit during the right season, you’ll have pretty good odds of catching some big trout in the park. Locals also recommend going downstream from the dam to find sunfish, carp, and smallmouth bass.
