Fun Events Coming Near Sinking Spring, PA this February

Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, is full of things to do and see in February. Whether you want to learn something new or go on a special date night, here’s a guide to some of the best events to attend in and around the Reading area in February.

Groundhog Day at the Nature Place

Kick off February in Reading by learning more about groundhogs to celebrate Groundhog Day on Feb. 2. This program put on by the Nature Place allows children to learn about the most-famous rodent in Pennsylvania, the groundhog. Researcher Dr. Stam Zervanos will share all of his knowledge about this animal from 1 to 2 p.m. The cost is $7 per person.

The Nature Place is part of Berks Nature and serves as the organization’s headquarters at Angelica Creek Park. The main mission of Berks Nature is to preserve the environment in Berks County. This includes offering education about the watersheds and water sources in and around Reading as well as the ways Berks Nature works to preserve land in the community. In addition to learning about groundhogs, your kids can run, play, and interact in the Nature Play Zone or walk the trails of the park with friends or with a dog while you’re there.

‘Love Letters’ at Kutztown University

The Broadway production of “Love Letters,” written by A.R. Gurney, is coming to Kutztown University in Kutztown on Feb. 13. The play follows characters Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner who start out as childhood friends and stay connected through correspondence, even though their lives go in very different directions. This particular production of “Love Letters” stars Barbara Eden and Hal Linden.

The production takes place at Schaffer Auditorium; tickets range from $38 for students and seniors to $42 for adults. The play runs from 7:30 to 10 p.m., making for the perfect pre-Valentine’s Day date.

Tour the Firefighter’s Museum

Reading is home to the Reading Area Firefighters Museum. Its goal is to preserve and provide education about the history of firefighting in Reading and surrounding Berks County. Their collections include Early High Eagle Fire Helmets and other firefighting artifacts from Reading FC, Liberty FC, and Rainbow FC. There’s also a room designed and furnished by famed businessman and former Postmaster General John Wanamaker. In addition to its educational mission, the Firefighters Museum is home to an extensive archive of documents and photographs related to firefighting.

Tours of the museum are available every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the month of February. Tickets are $5 per person, and the museum asks that people arrive at least one hour before the end of the tour period.
