The Toyota Corolla has been around for decades, selling big numbers and moving lots of units around the world. Recently, Toyota decided to take the Corolla platform and expand it into uncharted territory with the Corolla Cross. Why is it uncharted territory? Well, because the Corolla has traditionally been a sedan, but the new Corolla Cross is a subcompact SUV. This isn’t the only difference between these two models, and as your Toyota dealer in Sinking Spring, we understand what these two models are truly offering and can help you choose the best one for your needs.

It’s more than just a nameplate change and a few exterior modifications. Toyota really decided to approach the Corolla Cross in a different way and for a different segment of the car-shopping demographic. But what specifically makes the Corolla Cross unique or different from the standard Corolla? Is the Corolla Cross right for you? Let’s get into it to find out.

Compact Sedan vs Subcompact Crossover SUV

The most important and defining difference between the Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Corolla Cross is the categories that they each fit into. The Corolla is a compact sedan, which you can get as a traditional sedan or a hatchback. The Corolla Cross literally lives up to its moniker as a crossover in the subcompact SUV segment. So they are in two completely different categories, offering potential shoppers something unique within their respective segments.

The Corolla is also available as a hybrid, featuring a combustion and electric engine to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy ratings. The Corolla Cross makes its North American debut with a combustion engine. However, some regions have already received a hybrid model for increased fuel economy and lowered emission ratings, and we expect it won’t be too long before that option is available to us.

Interestingly enough, both vehicles are actually built on the same modular platform, sharing the unibody Toyota New Global Architecture design, abbreviated as the TNGA-C classification. This platform has been in use since the 2016 model year of the fourth generation Toyota Prius. Even though both the Corolla and Corolla Cross are on the same design platform, they have some startling differences in terms of what you can expect from their offerings.

A blue 2022 Toyota Corolla XSE is shown leaving a Toyota dealer in Sinking Spring.

Corolla vs Corolla Cross: Size Differences

Since both vehicles are classified in different segments, it means that they have different sizes. The TNGA-C platform allows for extended wheelbases and frame heights, as evident with the subcompact and compact crossovers available on the platform. In the case of the Corolla and Corolla Cross, the Corolla actually has a wheelbase that is 3 inches longer than the Cross, with the former measuring in at 106.3 inches and the latter measuring in at 103.9 inches.

However, the Corolla Cross is larger in various other key areas, including having more height on the Corolla by 8.3 inches. This actually translates into several interior and exterior differences, with the Cross having slightly more headroom than its sedan counterpart. Interestingly enough, though, the Corolla does offer a couple of inches more shoulder and hip room than the Cross, so there is a give and take in terms of interior cabin sizes.

The height differences play into the traversal capabilities as well. The Cross has more ground clearance, with the standard Corolla measuring 5.3 inches of clearance and the Cross topping out at 8.1 inches. Of course, if you want the sportier capabilities of the Corolla Cross to venture over terrain that demands more ground clearance, it does provide the advantage in this area.

Corolla vs Corolla Cross: Fuel Economy

When it comes to size differences, one of the changes you can expect to see manifest is in the fuel economy. As you know, size, height, and weight changes in a vehicle will determine what sort of fuel economy it achieves, in addition to the powertrain configuration. Even though both vehicles are available with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, the smaller size of the Corolla compared to the Corolla Cross nets it better overall gains with fuel efficiency.

The Corolla is available with both a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder and 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, both of which achieve roughly 30-31 miles per gallon in the city and around 38-40 miles per gallon on the highway. The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder for the Corolla Cross manages 31 miles per gallon in the city and an estimated 33 miles per gallon on the highway. This is to be expected from a subcompact crossover SUV, as they are known for getting better fuel mileage than larger midsize or full-size SUVs but still trail behind subcompact and compact sedans.

This feeds into the advantages of different segments appealing to different customer bases. Some people might prefer the size of the Corolla Cross and its ride height and sports-utility qualities, while others might prefer the smaller size of the Corolla and its fuel economy ratings. This gives everyone a little bit of something different to look forward to from both vehicles depending on what shoppers desire from an automobile.

Corolla vs Corolla Cross: Performance/Drivetrain

The Corolla and Corolla Cross have identical performance capabilities when it comes to the 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that’s standard in the Cross and available for the Corolla. The 4-cylinder produces up to 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque in the Corolla with 1 lb-ft of torque less in the Corolla Cross. The powertrain here is identical, including featuring dual variable valve timing with intelligence, usually abbreviated to VVT-i. This helps with the aforementioned fuel economy ratings for both vehicles.

The big difference between the two is that the Corolla has an additional powertrain as part of its line-up. In addition to the 2.0-liter, there is the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder dual-overhead-camshaft with 16-valves and Valvematic technology designed to help it achieve those impressive fuel economy ratings. The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder comes with 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque.

Another difference between the two is that even though both come with continuously variable transmissions, the Corolla Cross is available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive, whereas the Corolla is only available in front-wheel drive. Of course, while all-wheel drive helps with stability management and light off-road traversal, it does impact the overall fuel economy ratings. So this is another thing to consider between the two.

Corolla vs Corolla Cross: Buyer Preference

There really is no such thing as one Corolla variation being better than the other. It all boils down to what shoppers are looking for out of a vehicle and what they want to drive. Inside, you have access to the same infotainment and connected service features, as well as the robust Toyota Safety Sense, so you’re not giving up anything essential going with one vehicle over the other. The major differences boil down to size, performance, and fuel economy.

Depending on what you’re looking for out of a vehicle should determine which one you might prefer. Do you plan on driving off the road into campsites or vacationing in wilderness areas? The Corolla Cross with its all-wheel drive configuration might be the better option. Do you commute to work with long drives on a day-to-day basis or just need a vehicle for basic errands? Both vehicles will save you a lot in the fuel economy department while checking off all the essentials as far as performance is concerned. However, if you just need a quick errand car, the Corolla’s slightly lower price may be appealing.

Ultimately, in the Corolla vs Corolla Cross debate, you want something that suits your lifestyle and budget. So you should weigh what benefits you most and your driving habits, as well as what you expect to use the vehicle for. This way, the next time you visit us at Performance Toyota, you’ll have an idea of which version of Toyota’s popular Corolla nameplate will be at the top of your must-buy list.

A couple is shown charging their red 2021 Toyota Prius Prime Limited on a side street.

When it comes to choosing a car, truck, or SUV that’s big enough for your lifestyle needs, contains the equipment and features you want, and can handle punishing Pennsylvania winters, we’re a Sinking Spring auto dealer that believes in freedom of choice. In fact, the Toyota lineup is stacked with so many options that the hardest part will be narrowing down your search.

What do Pennsylvania buyers look for when they’re shopping for a new Toyota? First and foremost, budget is the most important consideration. For some, getting the highest level trim on a smaller model trumps sacrificing bells and whistles to upgrade to a lower trim of a larger model. Also, it’s important to consider how and where you’ll drive your new vehicle.

Some vehicles are uniquely suited to daily commuting, while others fit in well at the soccer field or in the carpool line at school. Still others manage to fit in just about everywhere. The point is, it’s best to let your lifestyle determine the vehicle that’s right for you. Ask yourself what’s important – do you want class-leading fuel economy, or are you willing to sacrifice mpg’s for greater towing capacity? Are you looking for a comfortable ride for yourself, or do you need room for a half dozen passengers?

Whatever you decide, the good news is, you’ll find what you’re seeking in the diverse Toyota vehicle lineup available here at Performance Toyota.

Compact SUVs and Crossovers

If you’re a budget buyer and you want a crossover body style, you’re in luck. The 2021 Toyota lineup includes a vast selection of models designed for value shoppers seeking not only a low purchase price but a low cost of ownership as well. Commuters and first-time buyers alike will love Toyota’s selection of affordably priced crossovers and SUVs.

The 2021 C-HR is Toyota’s most affordable crossover. With a starting price of $21,445, it offers a subcompact size that’s perfect for commuters.[a] The 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is perfect for streaming a favorite playlist or podcast, and the 31 mpg highway fuel economy rating means you won’t be stopping for gas very often.

If you need a little bit more room, consider the popular RAV4. The highest trim of the CH-R is actually pricier than the entry-level RAV4, which means buyers have the option of upsizing for the same or even a little lower price than the cost of a fully-loaded CH-R. The 2021 RAV4 LE is $26,350, and with an overall length of around 181 inches, it’s nearly a foot longer than the CH-R.[a]

Thrown into the compact SUV mix is the fast and extremely efficient RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. This pricey model starts at a higher base MSRP than the larger Highlander and 4Runner SUVs, which adds another layer of decision-making for buyers: do you want the performance and efficiency benefits associated with plug-in hybrid powertrains, or are you seeking bigger dimensions?

A red 2022 Toyota 4Runner Limited is shown at a campsite with the liftgate open and two dogs inside.

What if You Need Three Rows of Seats?

If you want something bigger, consider Toyota’s larger SUV lineup, which includes the Highlander, the 4Runner, and the largest of the bunch, the mighty Sequoia. For around $35,000, buyers can enter the realm of bigger cabins and larger people movers, and if luxury and outsized dimensions are what you’re seeking, you’ll find it in the Sequoia.

It’s an interesting lineup designed to give buyers multiple options. For example, most models overlap price-wise, so the most expensive RAV4 is about the same (or more) as the entry Highlander trim. If you have $35,000 to spend, you get to decide if moving up to a larger vehicle is preferable to fully equipping a smaller one or paying for a more responsive powertrain.

The Highlander and 4Runner each occupy a spot in the three-row lineup, but the two couldn’t be more different. The recently redesigned Highlander is a family crossover through-and-through, with the third row of seats included as standard. By contrast, the 4Runner makes that third row optional and puts the focus on more rugged off-road driving characteristics.

Both the Highlander and 4Runner can be had for around the same starting MSRP, but because they perform very differently, deciding should be based on personal preference. The Highlander offers a hybrid powertrain, while the 4Runner doesn’t, but the 4Runner has real 4×4 and other off-road goodies. Deciding between the two boils down to personal taste rather than budget, but it’s nice knowing that Toyota values variety.

The granddaddy of them all – the Sequoia – stands alone. Its $50,200 starting price tag and cavernous interior are unmatched by any other SUV in the 2021 Toyota lineup.[a] In short, large SUV buyers have but one option, and that’s the Sequoia. A six-trim lineup offers diverse equipment configurations, with the Platinum being the most luxurious and the TRD Pro the most off-road ready.

Hybrid Powertrains

Toyota is known for its hybrid technology, and the current lineup reflects it, with eleven different hybrid models to choose from. These include the iconic model that started it all, the Prius. Today’s Prius is more streamlined and modernized but remains highly fuel-efficient, with the 2021 Prius Prime Plug-In Hybrid achieving 133 MPGe.

Sedan lovers can choose between the compact Corolla Hybrid, the midsize Camry Hybrid, and the upscale full-size Avalon Hybrid. With the 2021 Corolla Hybrid starting at $23,500, the 2021 Camry Hybrid beginning at $23,270 range, and the 2021 Avalon Hybrid carrying a $37,000 MSRP, their price points don’t overlap.[a] Budget and size requirements will be the main factors in your decision.

For 2022, the Camry Hybrid comes in four trims, the base LE, the SE, the XSE, and the XLE. Making the leap from the smaller and less expensive Corolla is best if you require more space for passengers and cargo, but both vehicles are excellent options for commuters because of their long driving range and high fuel economy ratings. The Avalon adds more room and luxury to the mix.

SUV lovers looking for alternative fuel options aren’t left behind either. The RAV4, the Venza, and the Highlander all include hybrid powertrain versions, which means finding a family vehicle with seating for up to eight passengers is possible. Even the legendary Sienna minivan is now sold with a standard hybrid powertrain, demonstrating Toyota’s ongoing commitment to building family-friendly vehicles.

Toyota’s Capable Pickup Trucks

Pickup truck buyers looking for both utility and rugged durability will find it in the midsize Tacoma and the larger, full-size Tundra. Both models are priced with value in mind, with the 2021 Tacoma starting at $26,400 and the 2021 Tundra coming in at $34,025.[a] As with the brand’s sedan and SUV lineups, there is pricing overlap.

The Tacoma lineup consists of six trims, three of which – the TRD Off-Road, the TRD Pro, and the luxurious Limited – cost more than the entry Tundra SR. This leaves buyers with an important decision: fully equipping the smaller midsize Tacoma with class-leading off-road capability and high-end luxury finishes or spending the same amount of money for a larger truck with fewer options.

Making that decision boils down to how you plan to use your truck. Is it for commercial use, such as at the job site? Do you need additional towing capability? If buying a pickup truck is a lifestyle decision, or you want a truck for weekend off-roading, you’ll get more bang for your buck with a smaller Tacoma. Once again, when the price is the same for two options, the vehicle you choose should largely depend on your individual lifestyle.

Case in point: a comparably-equipped 2021 Tundra TRD Pro tips the scales at $49,125.[a] That’s a big price jump from the Tacoma TRD Pro’s price tag. Is it worth the substantially higher price tag? Maybe so, especially if your Tundra does double duty as a family vehicle.

Price Overlap is Toyota’s Goal

Toyota wants buyers to find a vehicle that fits not only their lifestyle and personal tastes but also their budget. Buyers want a variety of options to choose from, and when it comes to investing thousands of dollars, we want to know the pros and cons of each choice before signing on the dotted line.

As you progress through the buying cycle, ask yourself what’s most important. Do you value a larger vehicle, or can you live with something smaller that has more standard features? Another consideration is the powertrain. For some, a hybrid powertrain is more important than keeping to a restrictive budget.

Others are willing to shell out big bucks for the best-of-the-best in the category they want. Luckily, Toyota’s lineup accommodates each of these buyers, thoughtfully pricing its cars, trucks, and SUVs competitively and in such a way that graduating to a larger size or more well-equipped trim isn’t going to break the bank. If you have any questions about the Toyota lineup, simply speak with the team here at Performance Toyota – we’ll be happy to point you towards the right model.

A blue 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE is shown from a high angle parked on a city street after visiting a Reading Toyota dealership.

For anyone who is sick of the 2020-2021 vibe, fear not, for we bear the good news that 2022 will be a great year for all Toyota enthusiasts. The upcoming year is a big year for Toyota, including new models, new engineering, and excellent new fashion. You won’t be able to have all the new models and trims, but if you’re in the market for a new Toyota, you’ll have an exciting (though difficult) choice to make. So, with that, here are the 2022 details we’re most excited about here at your Reading Toyota dealership.

Corolla Cross

The Corolla cross is the crossover of which you’ve never dared to dream. This brand-new model comes in both FWD and AWD over three trims – the L, the LE, and the XLE. Built atop the TNGA-C (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, this crossover is sturdy and built to be a durable drive while offering a higher line of sight than the traditional Corolla. Its 2.0-L Dynamic Force Engine offers 169 horsepower, meaning that the Corolla Cross can hold its own on the open road. The LED lights and black body accents give the Corolla Cross a strong appearance, and wheel options from 17-inch steel on the L to 18-inch alloy on the XLE will make sure that the strong body has the strong support that it needs.

The cargo capacity for the Corolla Cross is competitively excellent with its 60/40 folding rear seats and available power liftgate with height adjustability, in addition to accessories including a roof rack with crossbars, an activity mount, and all-weather floor mats. With a towing capacity of up to 1,500 pounds, the Corolla Cross is able to carry tremendous loads for a small crossover.

Because of Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Control system, the Cross holds stellar fuel economy, estimated at 32 combined MPG for the FWD model and 30 combined MPG for the AWD model. Think about the money you could save on gas.

More importantly than the stellar entertainment technology features (which, throughout the three models, includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Audio Plus with Remote Connect, a nine-speaker JBL sound system, Wireless Charging, and rear-seat USB ports), the Corolla Cross offers top-notch safety technology. All models of the Corolla Cross come with both Toyota Safety Sense and STAR Safety System. Additionally, the LE and XLE models offer Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic, with the XLE also offering Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking. One last safety feature which is worth noting is the fact that the Corolla Cross is equipped with a total of nine airbags throughout the cabin. So, no matter what may happen, Toyota is working overtime to keep you and your passengers safe with the Corolla Cross.

Prius Nightshade Edition

We all know the Prius; it was one of the pioneers of hybrid vehicles, but there’s a new Prius in town, unlike any Prius you’ve seen before. As if there wasn’t already an abundance of Prius trims, with the L Eco, LE, LE AWD-e, XLE, XLE AWD-e, and Limited grades, Toyota evidently feels that it is high time to take things to the next level. With that, we would like to introduce you to the Nightshade Edition Prius. Yes, Toyota has been shaking the automotive world with its increasing collection of Nightshade vehicles, but the Prius Nightshade Edition is a truly exciting development as it is the first hybrid to enter the Nightshade family.

The Nightshade Prius is by far the classiest Prius on the market, offering color schemes of Midnight Black Metallic, Super White, and Silver Metallic. All three color schemes are designed with intriguing accents, including black headlight accents, mirror caps, door handles, and a shark fin antenna. 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels on the FWD trim and 15-inch alloy wheels on the WD-e trim give the Prius a confident stance. The Nightshade Prius still looks like a Prius, maintaining the classic hybrid’s structural design – it just looks like a cooler, edgier Prius.

This vehicle is redefining automotive efficiency with its automatic grille shutter, which decreases aerodynamic drag by shutting when airflow to the radiator is unneeded. Though appearing to be a compact car, due to its liftback design, Prius FWD models offer a whole 50.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded. The Nightshade Prius is a leader in automotive technology, with its customizable 4.2-inch Dual Multi-Information Display including Energy Monitor and Hybrid System Indicator with Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, and Eco Diary, as well as plays for climate control, driver support, and more.

A silver Concept Toyota bZ4X BEV is shown driving past a city building.

Toyota bZ4X BEV

Toyota has just blown up the world of electric automation with its debut of the Toyota bZ4X (“Toyota bZ) Concept. Ultimately, Toyota bZ will be a global series of battery-electric vehicles, stemming from Toyota’s dedication to bringing about carbon neutrality by 2050 (bZ does stand for “Below Zero,” after all). But, wait, it gets better: the Toyota bZ4X is an SUV concept.

Yes, this brand new AWD vehicle is built upon the new e-TNGA BEV-dedicated platform. The bZ BEV is designed with a long wheelbase and short overhangs, giving it a new, intriguing appearance. The interior design is open-concept, maximizing the comfort of the driving experience. As part of Toyota’s initiative for carbon neutrality by 2050, they intend to be offering 70 electric vehicles by 2025. More information will soon be coming from Toyota regarding the bZ4X concept, but it looks like sales will begin in 2022, so get ready!

Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport Model

The Toyota 4Runner has been a staple of Toyota vehicles for years now, but it is now taking off-roading to a new level with the addition of the 2022 TRD Sport model. Toyota has outdone themselves, going beyond the TRD’s already-renowned four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension, as the addition of the TRD Sport model brings with it astonishing chassis technology in the Cross-Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS).

The X-REAS system has a center control absorber that cross-links the shock absorbers on opposite corners of the vehicle (this shape forms an “X,” hence the “X” in “X-REAS”) which offsets opposing inputs. Thus, the X-REAS system adjusts the force of shock absorbers on bumpy terrain. The 4Runner TRD Sport offers both RWD (which offers 9 inches of ground clearance) and part-time 4WD (which offers 9.6 inches of ground clearance) with a 2-speed transfer case. The truck offers impressive machine-faced 20-inch wheels with dark gray color accents, and just like all 4Runners, it comes with a full-sized spare tire.

Aside from the excellent new engineering, the 4Runner TRD Sport is shaking up 4Runner fashion. On the exterior, you will see color-keyed grille accents, rocker panels, and body molding. If the TRD Sport’s leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic steering wheel wasn’t enough to convince you of this stylish interior, it has abandoned the TRD old cloth seats for black SofTex-trimmed seats with gray contrast stitching (the front headrests even have TRD logos stitched in gray).

The TRD is truly an impressive vehicle with its 270-horsepower DOHC 4.0L V6 engine (with 278 lb-ft of torque), its five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission, which features sequential shift mode for manual-shift when desired, a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 lbs, and Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD) which allows a small amount of wheel slippage in order to help the car dig itself out of a surface. Any off-road enthusiast will want to get into a 4Runner TRD Sport as soon as possible.

Get Excited

If you’re a car enthusiast who feels like the past two years have been a little bit slow, then just wait until 2022 because Toyota will give you plenty to play with. With these new vehicles showcasing innovation in both style and capability, driving will be a whole new ball game. So, yeah, 2022 is a year to be excited about for anybody looking to buy a new Toyota.

A pale blue 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE is shown overlooking a city at sunset.

Here at Performance Toyota, your PA Toyota dealer, we have a secret. It’s good news, too, because one of Toyota’s most beloved nameplates just received a new addition to its already robust lineup of offerings. In fairness, it’s technically a brand new model of its own, but it shares familiar nomenclature that invites a closer look. Introducing the all-new 2022 Corolla Cross, and no, it’s not a sedan or a hatchback: it’s a crossover.

Why bridge into a new category with a classic name? Toyota intends to capture the hearts of entry-level subcompact buyers who just aren’t feeling the sedan body style but for whom graduating into an SUV-like alternative wasn’t financially possible. The Corolla Cross is designed for the new grads and first-time buyers seeking a little style and utility to go along with a low monthly payment.

If that doesn’t sound like you, don’t dismiss the Corolla Cross quite yet. It’s also infused with tons of next-generation technology, both infotainment and safety-oriented, as well as a trim lineup that edges into near-luxury levels, so building a Corolla Cross with premium features is possible. Toyota even offers all-wheel drive for added peace of mind on wet or wintry days.

Discover Corolla Cross: Design and Styling

The Corolla name is half a century old, but year after year, Toyota manages to reinvent and reimagine the popular sedan. Lending the name to its most current crossover is marketing genius because the Corolla stands for value, durability, and quality – three of the pillars of Toyota’s engineering philosophy. The best-selling Corolla continues to win vast amounts of market share, and Toyota expects the same results for the new Corolla Cross.

One reason the Corolla Cross is destined for popularity is its clean, sporty exterior styling. It’s modern without taking edginess too far but also possesses a family resemblance to its larger Toyota SUV siblings, like the Highlander. Toyota designed the Corolla Cross with a higher sightline, which is one of the main reasons buyers lean toward buying an SUV in the first place.

Ample use of LED lighting modernizes the front and rear, and the black grille prominently displays the Toyota emblem. In the rear, a high-mounted integrated spoiler adds a sporty touch, and Toyota lets buyers choose between 17 or 18-inch wheels, depending on the trim. The interior continues the modern theme, with plenty of in-dash tech and a swath of available comfort and convenience features.

Features like ambient lighting and an available power moonroof notch up the luxury quotient for buyers inclined toward a few extra bells and whistles, but even without these niceties, the Corolla Cross exhibits sophisticated styling both inside and out, with enough upscale equipment to satisfy base model buyers.

If you’re leaning toward a crossover, you’re probably interested in the added cargo and passenger space not found on a sedan or hatchback. The Corolla Cross offers a spacious interior cabin with seating for 5 and plenty of cargo capacity for groceries or luggage. The standard 60/40 split-folding seat makes stowing cargo and carrying a back seat passenger (or two) easy.

A pale blue 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE is shown from the side after visiting a PA Toyota dealer.

Performance and Safety

Yes, performance and efficiency can coexist, and the 2022 Corolla Cross exemplifies this, with a 169 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an estimated average fuel economy rating of 32 MPG. It’s rumored that Toyota will add a hybrid powertrain at some point, but for now, the Corolla Cross in its gas-powered form does just fine on fuel economy, which will keep ownership costs low. After all, as the second smallest SUV in the lineup, the Corolla Cross is built for efficiency.

Toyota Safety Sense, the company’s suite of driver-assist safety systems, is standard on every Corolla Cross, adding additional protection against unforeseen driving hazards. Driver-assist technologies work via strategically placed sensors, radar, and cameras. Together, these components continuously monitor the area in front of beside and behind the vehicle, alerting the driver to potential issues.

Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection works by monitoring the front of the vehicle while traveling. If it senses the traffic ahead has slowed down (or stopped), and your vehicle hasn’t adjusted its speed, the system will send an audible alert and, if necessary, apply additional braking assistance to avoid a collision. It’s sensitive enough to sense a pedestrian entering your direction of travel, too, performing the same braking task if necessary.

Lane Departure Warning is an especially helpful highway aid. It senses when your Corolla Cross drifts out of its lane, which is not an uncommon occurrence during long, boring highway travel. If you drift, the system alerts you and provides gentle steering nudges that you can feel beneath your hands, reminding you to center the vehicle back in its intended lane of travel. Lane Departure Warning also offers the unintended benefit of reminding us to signal when we change lanes. After all, that nudge is a correction, and if it happens frequently, we may begin to realize that we’ve gotten lax about using our turn signals.

That’s one bad driving habit, but what about tailgating? Toyota has a solution. Toyota Safety Sense includes Adaptive Cruise Control. This is no ordinary cruise control system; in fact, Adaptive Cruise Control sets not only speed but also distance from the vehicle ahead. Once you choose your preferred distance, set the cruise control feature and relax. The system’s radar will keep an invisible eye on the car ahead and automatically lower your vehicle’s speed when it senses the distance is closing. Once traffic loosens up, it will resume your chosen speed automatically.

A close up shows the infotainment screen in a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE.

Infotainment and Technology Features

With three trims to choose from – the L, LE, and XLE – Toyota lets buyers dial in the level of tech they want. On the entry end, Toyota provides a 7-inch touchscreen, and more expensive trims receive a larger 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard in all trims, making smartphone integration a simple one-step process.

The LE and XLE Corolla Cross trims each receive a standard wireless device charger, and all vehicles contain USB chargers. Toyota knows that younger buyers especially value high-end entertainment and technology features, which is why the available JBL 9-speaker premium audio system is likely to be a popular choice. Amazon Alexa compatibility unlocks access to tons of entertainment content, as does the complementary three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio.

As great as all the in-vehicle features are, what stands out are Toyota’s comprehensive connected services. Most automakers now feature robust subscription-based connectivity options, but they tend to taper down to the basics for less expensive vehicles. Not so for the Corolla Cross, which is expected to feature the full suite, including app-based conveniences, Toyota’s Safety Connect live operator service, and concierge support.

Maybe It’s Time for Something New

Slated just above the subcompact C-HR size and price-wise, the Corolla Cross takes its place in a gap in the lineup that wasn’t immediately obvious before Toyota’s announcement. Between the C-HR and the RAV4, it seemed buyers could find a good match, but as it turns out, the Corolla name lends credence to the addition of yet another crossover to the existing stacked nine vehicle lineup. In a way, the 2022 Corolla Cross bridges two categories and will likely draw in sedan/hatchback buyers in the hunt for a traditional Corolla as well as the mainstream subcompact SUV seekers it’s designed to attract. Either way, it should prove to be a winner.

A blue 2022 Toyota Camry TRD is shown rounding a corner on a racetrack.

There are several reasons why you should be searching for a “Toyota dealer near me” to take a look at the 2022 Toyota lineup if you are in the market for a new ride. It is all too likely that you have already heard about many of these compelling reasons, but we are sure there are a few that will surprise you. Let’s start things off with a rather impressive statistic; over 80 percent of Toyota models sold in the last 20 years are still on the road. This means that the odds are heavily in your favor that your new Toyota will be with you for a very long time.

In addition, Toyota models boast a very high resale value. This means that when you do finally decide to trade in your Toyota for a new model, you can expect to get top dollar. There are other reasons why you should be searching for a Toyota, including the wonderful selection of trucks, SUVs, and hybrids. In a nutshell, there is a Toyota out there that will be a perfect fit for whatever you have in store for it. So before you head out to your closest Toyota dealer, let’s take a closer look at some 2022 models to check out.

Toyota Camry

If you are in the market for a new sedan, you are definitely in the minority. That’s not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination; it’s just that so many drivers are searching for trucks and SUVs. Perhaps one reason trucks and SUVs are so popular is because sedans are sometimes thought of as boring and outdated. Well, the 2022 Camry isn’t boring or outdated. In fact, there are a lot of things to look forward to with the new Camry.

The Camry might be billed as a midsize sedan, but it still seats five quite comfortably, and there is plenty of room left over for all of their cargo. Let’s not forget to mention that the Camry is filled with all sorts of storage cubbies and other ways to pack away your water bottles, electronic devices, and other necessities. Look, the Camry might not have the interior space of a full-size SUV, but not everybody needs all that space, especially if it will never be utilized.

One stand-out feature of the 2022 Camry is that it is the car in its segment to offer a V6 engine. This is great for those who are more concerned about power than fuel economy. But it is more about choices than anything else. Frugal drivers will love the EPA rating for the four-cylinder and hybrid choices, while others will rejoice in hearing that the V6 cranks out over 300 horsepower.

Who says sedans are boring? We guess that these people have never heard of the Camry TRD trim. Actually, enthusiasts agree that the TRD is more than just a trim level; it is a way of life. The Camry TRD screams performance and enjoys all of the features you love in a car, including a performance exhaust, aggressive tires, and upgraded suspension. This is the closest you can get at your local Toyota dealer to a NASCAR Camry.

A neon green 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is shown driving down a dirt path after leaving a Toyota dealer near you.

4Runner

We have a little secret for you; you don’t have to belong to a special club or pay yearly dues to own a Toyota 4Runner. Many of you might think that since the 4Runner has such a loyal fanbase that you need to belong to some sort of secret club. However, the truth of the matter is that anyone, even you, can go out and purchase a 2022 4Runner.

There are any number of reasons why an SUV can remain so popular, even after over 30 years in production. But one thing is for sure; the 4Runner has a solid reputation for high quality and long-term reliability. In all likelihood, you could pass your 4Runner down to your kids, who, in turn, could pass it along to their own kids – at least, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.

If you would enjoy a vehicle that is as fun as it is versatile, you cannot pass up the 4Runner. One of the reasons the 4Runner is such a popular choice is because it attracts a variety of drivers. In addition, the 4Runner is a great day-to-day SUV. It can get you to work day in and day out, but it can cross river beds and climb mountain trails on the weekends.

The 4Runner is definitely fun to drive; just ask anyone who has ever owned one. But there is more; the 4Runner is also comfortable, and you will enjoy the smooth ride. And if the size of your family dictates more seating, you will be glad to know that you can get a 4Runner with an optional third row of seats.

Tacoma

There are drivers out there who need a big truck for work purposes, or perhaps they are planning on hauling heavy loads or towing big items. There are also drivers out there who desire a compact truck that gets excellent fuel economy and can be easily parked in a busy lot. And then there are those who want something right in between the two; it’s these people who need a Tacoma.

If you have ever seen a commercial for the Toyota Tacoma, it is always seen flying through the air and overtaking tremendous obstacles on a mountain trail. The point Toyota is making with such commercials is that the Tacoma is one tough truck. But don’t take our word for it; take one for a drive on a rocky trail, and you will soon see why off-roaders love the Tacoma. Tough trucks not only stand the test of time, but they also do so while giving you the adventures you desire.

Just because the Tacoma is a midsize truck, this does not mean it can’t tow and haul like the big boys. Indeed, the Tacoma offers some pretty admirable numbers in terms of towing and hauling capacities. It is the perfect option for those needing a truck to haul their boat to the lake or take a load of trash to the landfill.

When it comes to choices, you have a lot with the Tacoma. In addition to several trim levels, there are plenty of other options that help make your new Tacoma unique to your personality and style. On top of some very vivid paint colors, the Tacoma offers a variety of wheel choices and other features that give it a custom appearance. If you enjoy the attention you get driving a stylish truck, then you will absolutely love the all-new Tacoma.
